Kindie raided again by council
17-Jan-2012
GEORGE TOWN: The kindergarten in Air Itam which is operating without a licence has been raided by the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) for the second time in less than a week.
This time, the council’s enforcement personnel confiscated tables, chairs and learning apparatus.
The council had also raided the kindergarten on Jan 11.
MPPP building director Yew Tung Seang said yesterday morning’s raid was carried out as the kindergarten had not ceased operations.
“Regardless of the outcome of the kindergarten’s appeal against the council’s decision, it should stop operating for now as it does not have approval to do so,” he said.
The raid at the kindergarten, which is registered with the Education Ministry, was carried out following complaints from neighbours.
State Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow, who is also state DAP chairman, had earlier brushed aside allegations that DAP members had lodged complaints against the kindergarten.
On Jan 13, some 20 residents protested against the kindergarten as they did not want the housing area to be turned into a commercial centre. They also denied that they were DAP members.
On Jan 14, the kindergarten’s senior assistant Winnie Yap said it had to continue its operations as parents were still bringing their children there.
She said the kindergarten was appealing the council’s decision.
It is learnt the case will be heard by the council tomorrow.
